I was in my late teens when I bought my first SLR camera - a Russian-built fully manual Zenith-E with a 58mm Helios lens. The camera would today be described as ‘entry- level’ but well built and a good introduction to photography. I loved the creativity a “proper camera” allowed by having full control of the imagemaking process. I soon swapped the Zenith for a Pentax K1000 - another camera popular with beginners and enthusiasts. Like the Zenith, it was a wholly manual camera, where you set the aperture and shutter speed of your choice based on the film sensitivity - typically 100, 200 or 400 ASA (now ISO).
In my early twenties I started taking photos of theatrical productions, having taken part with friends in local amateur dramatic productions. This built my interest in capturing people, characters and moods.
Over the years my stage photography skills evolved to include live music and music events, and later, other stage events such as presentations, lectures and awards ceremonies.
Coverage of entertaintment and culture further saw my reportage style covering parties, proms and functions such as receptions, anniversaries, galas and other family, business and civic functions.
I also expanded my work to include product photography, and food photography.
In 2021 I started to move from dSLR to mirrorless cameras and currently own a Nikon Z50, Z5 and Z6ii.
Over the years I have accumulated an increasing amount of photographic equipment, having an inability to dispose of items I've grown attached to - a condition known as Gear Acquisition Syndrome, or GAS. I currently own 17 cameras, from point-and-shoot film cameras to full frame 35mm digital SLRs and mirrorless.
Based in East Hertfordshire, I am available for a wide range of assignments in Herts, Essex, London and beyond.
